The Abbey is one of the most complete remains of a Cistercian abbey in Britain dating back to 1132, and boasts elegant landscaped water gardens, including ornamental lakes, follies and temples to explore. Newby Hall, a beautifully restored and one of England’s renowned Robert Adam’s houses, set in 25 acres of award-winning gardens, is within two miles of the city centre. The market place in Ripon centres around the oldest free standing obelisk in the country which was erected in 1702 and stands at 90 foot high. The main shopping centre of Ripon, which include many high street stores, surrounds the recently renovated Market Square, with paved streets leading off the Square where enchanting shops can be found selling bespoke products and gifts. In the summer months the city has a continental feel with cafes bars spilling out onto the cobbles streets, providing a relaxing atmosphere to any tourists. The city boasts many fine and well maintained parts the most magnificent being the Spa Gardens where borders are well stocked with traditional English flowers, and you will also be able to admire the splendid Victorian bandstand.
